Campbell: Doppio Zero restaurant expands its Southern Italian footprint

A decade after its founding in Mountain View, the Doppio Zero group has thrown open the doors on its latest, a restaurant on a prime Campbell corner.

Founders Gianni Chiloiro and Angelo Sannino have imported a 900-degree, wood-burning pizza oven from Naples and started baking their signature pies a week ago in downtown Campbell, their fifth Bay Area location. The business partners are aiming to double that number by the year 2030.

Designer Oswaldo Mesia transformed the interior of this former retail space and Daniela Chiloiro created the indoor and outdoor murals. There’s seating for 135 patrons in the dining room and at the bar and for 40 diners outdoors.

The name Doppio Zero refers to the “double zero” flour (also imported from Naples) for the pizza crust. Gambero Rosso, an Italian publisher that reviews restaurants worldwide, recommends the Vesuvio, with yellow tomato sauce, fior di latte mozzarella, capocollo and stracciatella cheese. A red San Marzano tomato sauce tops the spicy Calabrese (nduja) number — one of the most-ordered pizzas during the first week of operation — as well as the Margherita, Salsiccia (sausage) and Diavola (chorizo) pies.

The popular white pizzas feature such ingredients as Prosciutto di Parma, mortadella, caramelized figs, wild mushrooms and broccoli rabe.

House specialties include a Neapolitan staple, the Fried Calzone, stuffed with salami, smoked mozzarella and ricotta; the Fettuccine Wild Boar with its long-simmered sauce; and the Marechiaro, house-made squid ink tagliolini with jumbo scallops, clams and roasted garlic in a tomato sauce.
