Big San Jose hotel closes temporarily, weeks-long shutdown is eyed

SAN JOSE — One of San Jose’s most iconic hotels has temporarily halted operations due to a maintenance mishap, a shutdown slated to last for weeks.

Hotel De Anza, a historic highrise hotel in downtown San Jose, has halted operations and won’t reopen until at least mid-June, according to a website maintained by lodging titan Hyatt. The De Anza hotel operates under the Destination by Hyatt brand.

“The safety and wellbeing of our guests and colleagues is always a top priority,” said Claudia Dowdy, general manager of Hotel De Anza.

The hotel will waive cancellation fees and refund deposits and prepayments, Hyatt stated on its website.

“Hotel De Anza has suspended normal hotel operations due to the effects of unexpected maintenance and is expected to resume normal hotel operations on June 16th, 2024,” Hyatt said in the web post.

The De Anza’s temporary shutdown occurs at the start of the busy summer travel season nationwide and in the Bay Area.

A hotel staffer said the closure was linked to water damage in the hotel but didn’t elaborate.

The 100-room hotel is one of San Jose’s few Zig Zag Moderne, or Art Deco, buildings. The hotel was built i 1931 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The hotel faced demolition in the 1970s after it had become dilapidated. The San Jose Redevelopment Agency, now defunct, was able to rescue the building and arranged for its reconstruction, however.

The Hotel De Anza is one of San Jose’s best-known lodging places, perched on a prominent spot at 233 West Santa Clara Street.

“We continue to extend care to all colleagues and guests, and the hotel is continuing to waive cancellation fees at this time,” Dowdy said.

The cancellation fees will be waived from now through June 15, Hyatt stated on its website. Any deposits and prepayments for canceled stays on these dates, including prepaid rates, will be refunded, Hyatt stated.

“Thank you for your understanding,” Hyatt said in the web post.
