Saratoga residents defrauded after receiving phony pop-up messages

Grand theft: Someone stole a luxury wristwatch from a residence in the 20000 block of Wardell Road, during which time various service workers had access to the home, for a loss valued at approximately $16,917.

Assault: The victim reported a prior assault after a road rage dispute between two motorists at Pierce and Congress Springs roads. The victim alleged the suspect spit on her after occupants from both vehicles pulled over and exited the cars. The suspect is known, and the case was submitted to the district attorney’s office for warrant issuance.

Shoplifting, resisting arrest: At 8:42 a.m., deputies responded to a theft call at Safeway in the Argonaut Center on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road. An investigation revealed the suspect stole merchandise valued at approximately $18. The suspect resisted arrest and fled from deputies.

Loitering/prowling: At 10:58 a.m., deputies responded to a prowling call at a residence in the 18000 block of Cyril Place. An investigation revealed the suspect was loitering around the property and going through trash.

Residential burglary: At 9:50 p.m., someone entered a residence in the 12000 block of Country Squire Lane by breaking a sliding glass door. Nothing was reported stolen.

Residential burglary: At 10:11 p.m., someone entered a residence in the 20000 block of Wardell Road by breaking a rear sliding glass door. Nothing was reported stolen.

Residential burglary: At 10:30 p.m., someone entered a residence in the 13000 block of Trinity Avenue through an unlocked rear door. Nothing was reported stolen.

May 23

Theft by false pretenses: The victim called a number from a pop-up notification on their computer. The suspect claimed the victim’s computer was hacked and money was needed to restore the computer to working order. The victim withdrew cash from the bank and gave it to the suspect, who collected the cash directly from the victim at the victim’s residence in the 13000 block of Kevin Street for a loss of approximately $23,000.

Reckless evading: At 1:17 a.m., deputies responded to an automated license plate reader notification for a stolen vehicle at Saratoga Avenue and Highway 85. An investigation revealed the vehicle was previously stolen from Los Banos and was still outstanding. Deputies located and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver recklessly evaded, and the pursuit was ultimately terminated in the interest of public safety.

May 24

Theft by false pretenses: A Saratoga resident contacted the suspect after receiving a pop-up notification on their computer. The suspect ultimately convinced the victim to provide remote access to the computer and then accessed the victim’s digital payment account and withdrew approximately $27,277.

Reckless evading: At 5:42 a.m., deputies responded to an automated license plate reader notification for a vehicle with stolen license plates at Saratoga Avenue and Mellon Drive. An investigation revealed the plates were stolen from a vehicle in San Jose and were still outstanding. Deputies located and stopped the vehicle, but as deputies approached the vehicle on foot, the driver took off and drove away.

May 25

Residential burglary: Between 4:30 p.m. and 9:14 p.m., someone entered a residence in the 18000 block of Purdue Drive by breaking a rear glass door. Nothing was reported stolen.
